Brev till Barroso – Letter to Barroso

President Barroso,

– We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.

Mr Barroso, tear down this wall!

English translation

President Barroso,

The tragedies in Lampedusa, where hundreds of lives were lost, again show the need to open up more legal channels into Europe.

More than 17,000 deaths of people trying to get to Europe have been documented by the refugee organization United during the past two decades – and only a small fraction of the deaths come to light. In 2011, the UN refugee agency UNHCR listed the Mediterranean Sea as the deadliest waterway after taking four lives a day.

Migration is not a threat to Europe and the wall that has been built up to needs to be dismantled.

Migration is one of our times strongest forces, a potential gain for both those who move, the country left behind and the country she comes to. Immigration gives people protection from war and persecution, doubles the size of the world economy and is by far the most effective tool to fight poverty.

We would like to remind you of a speech given in 1987 by another world leader on walls that were shutting people out from parts of Europe.

We the signatories of this petition encourage you to review the current rules and dismantle the wall around Europe. Mr. Barroso, tear down this wall!
